Abstract

This is the fourth article published by the journal Apunts. Educación Física y Deportes on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Barcelona Olympics. The purpose of the series is to analyse the impact of the Olympics on the city and the country one quarter of a century after the capital of Catalonia hosted one of the most important events ever. Based on the learning from this period from the perspectives of sports, economics and society, this study suggests and discusses some of the factors that may be crucial in the organisation of future sporting events. Variables are analysed such as the place and repetition rate where these events are held as well as future trends. There are other aspects which are directly associated with governance, such as the choice of candidate sites and the provenance of the resources to finance them. With the opinions of different authors, an effort has been made to point to the vision of the events in the forthcoming years.
