Abstract

This study aims to identify a set of appropriate indicators for evaluating schools in terms of sports and physical exercise using a list of aspects which, in the opinion of experts in school sports and physical exercise, determine the quality of schools in this field. The instruments used were semi-structured interviews with three experts of recognized standing and proven experience in the field, and a questionnaire rating scale which was administered to 15 school sports directors and 22 coaches from different regions in Spain. The results showed a list of 64 indicators of which 19 were prioritized based on the values obtained in the questionnaire. The most salient indicators included: “Description of physical exercise as educational and healthy in the School’s Educational Plan”; “Existence of a sports coordinator and their duties”; “Percentage of sports staff with specific training”; and “Variety of sports and physical exercise in addition to physical education classes”. These indicators can be used in self-assessment or external evaluation tools.
