Abstract

The rapid growth of outdoor sporting activities has generated a series of environ¬mental impacts that are being denounced by ecological associations (CODA, 1992; AEDENAT, /994) and specialized magazines (Quercus, GAIA, Natura, Integral…) putting forward alternative proposals (AEDENAT, 1994; CENEAM, 1995; ECO¬TRANS, 1995). As professionals in physical education we have approached these problems from the field of action of physical education system. As the first point, we explain how physical education possesses great potential in respect to environ¬mental education, which, as we understand it, has yet to be developed. In the second part, we see from a generic way hoe physical sporting activities in the outdoors are influenced, explaining that their mere practice “per se” does not constitute envi¬ronmental education. Finally, we present some options and proposals for action to bring about a treatment of outdoor sporting activities from a critical perspective, as key aspect in fomenting a truly environmental education, fronithe area of physical education.
