Abstract

The aim of this study was to explore the safety of conventional public sports facilities and amenities in Extremadura. A total of 144 sport facilities were analyzed (land and water) with 3,357 safety items completed according to the checklists drawn up by the National Sport Council (CSD) and Biomechanical Institute of Valencia (IBV) in 2008. The results show that the total average percentage of safety in the analyzed facilities is 67 %. By sports facilities, football pitches have the lowest safety (63 %) and basketball courts have the highest (79 %). General and structural aspects show the lowest safety percentage. Conversely, the net aspects in land sport facilities achieve the highest safety. We conclude that sports facilities do not comply with all safety regulations. It is recommended to include different safety strategies in the sports management of sports facilities to enhance the safety of doing sport while using them.
