Abstract

At the time of the Second Spanish Republic (1931-1939), some of the major institutions of physical education and sport still to be found today in Catalonia were founded. This institutionalisation was spurred by the Academy of Physical Education of Catalonia, the subject of this study. Based on primary document sources and other parallel studies, we examine the relevance of this body and its influence on providing Catalan physical education and sport projects with democratic, academic, professional, scientific and national representation. Under the forced circumstances of the Second Republic, the Academy of Physical Education of Catalonia meant a professional and technical contribution for the country that rose above ideological and political rivalries. Despite the time elapsed since then, we believe that today a New Academy of Physical Education of Catalonia could represent academic interests and the interests of a scientific and pedagogical discipline that is moving forward in continuous crisis and transformation
