Abstract

At present, researchers and trainers use one repetition maximum (1 RM) when doing squats as the most identifiable
and representative measurement of maximum muscle strength in the movement of hip and knee extension. This review
paper seeks to describe the procedures used in research to assess 1 RM in squats and analyze the determining factors for
their performance. Using samples of trained subjects, very similar measurement protocols were used in most of the studies
reviewed. Furthermore, the heterogeneity of published results in terms of performance in 1 RM is mainly due to differences
in the age and sex of the athletes, the technical execution of the squat and/or the history of strength training of the selected
sample based on the type of sport done.
