Abstract
This essay first reviews the prospects of the media as a promoter of peace. It highlights what some scholars suggest might be attributes of ‘discursive spaces’ within the media that are more conducive to the development of a culture of peace. Next, these attributes are shown to be present in mediated sports and, as such, open the possibility that the media might promote peace through sports. Finally, five specific media role –framing, humanizing, ritualization, conferring status, and creating a mood– taken from the literature of peace advocacy regarding the media, are applied to the case of sports programming. It is recommended that these be implemented through both journalist training and the efforts of peace organizations that provide information to the media.
