Abstract
The World Cup in South Africa has put Africa on the world map and shown the world the triumph of Spain’s style of football based on group effort, team spirit, humility, internal cohesion and beautiful play. The professional and effective South African organizers have been able to mobilize and enthuse local people who have taken part in the World Cup with the pride of being an African in a joyous, festive spirit that has also staked a claim for the people of Africa. This event marks the worldwide launch of the “South Africa” brand and gives clear notice of seeking to host the first Olympic Games in Africa (perhaps in 2020). It opens a window of hope in the 21st century for the lost continent through a universal, massive, emotional and commercial sports spectacle which is also played out in the field of politics and economics.
