Abstract

The business dimension is an important factor in the survival of organizations and essential for the analysis of their profitability and competitiveness. It is also a variable of great influence on the structure of sports organizations. The main purpose of this study was to enhance understanding of the features and behavior of Spanish Sports Facility Management Organizations. We had two research objectives. They were firstly to classify these organizations by their legal form, geographic location and size, and secondly to explore the evolution of the following variables for the organizations as a whole: Total assets, operating revenue and number of employees before and after the crisis of 2008 (first period 2004-2008; second period 2008-2012). We found that most of the Spanish Sports Facility Management Organizations are small and micro enterprises operating under the legal form of a limited liability company and are located mainly in Catalonia, Andalusia and Madrid. As was to be expected, positive evolution was observed in the variables studied during the period 2004-2008 with the opposite trend after the crisis yet nevertheless with average values higher than those collated in 2004.
