Abstract

Scientific production, mainly published in journals, has been a key issue in the research activity evaluation, also in the field of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences (PASS). The reasons that explain why journals have became the main way for knowledge communication and certification are mentioned in this paper. It is also discussed the systematic use of impact factor as journal quality indicator, and different alternatives for journal evaluation in Spain are presented. Moreover, the paper analyzes whether PASS Spanish journals accomplish knowledge communication and certification role, and even, research activity evaluation. Due to journals weak normalization, reduced use of peer review processes and poor diffusion, the paper concludes with some recommendations. It is highlighted the urgent need to develop a supported policy aimed to improve journals quality in order to convert them in a valuable reference in research activity evaluation.
