In this paper as part of observational methodology we have constructed an observation instrument to detect time patterns of tactical behaviour using Theme <em>software<\/em> version 5.0 in our observational sampling consisting of the men\u2019s 5,000 metres track event final races at the World Championships in Paris in 2003 and Berlin in 2009, the Olympics in Athens in 2004 and Beijing in 2008 and the European Championships in Gothenburg in 2006 and Barcelona in 2010.
