La p\u00e8rdua de pes es deu a la p\u00e8rdua d\u2019aigua (suor i respiraci\u00f3) i quan aquesta \u00e9s important, afecta de manera decisiva els sistemes nervi\u00f3s, cardiovascular, termoregulador, endocr\u00ed i\/o metab\u00f2lic, i pot provocar fins i tot la mort. Per eludir aquests efectes negatius de la deshidrataci\u00f3 aix\u00ed com la disminuci\u00f3 del rendiment, l\u2019atleta haur\u00e0 de beure prou quantitat de l\u00edquid abans, durant, i despr\u00e9s de la competici\u00f3 o la pr\u00e0ctica d\u2019exercici. Idealment, la beguda ser\u00e0 una soluci\u00f3 composta d\u2019aigua, electr\u00f2lits i carbohidrats, en quantitat adequada per garantir, d\u2019una banda, un rendiment \u00f2ptim durant la competici\u00f3 i, d\u2019una altra, reposar efica\u00e7ment i completament les p\u00e8rdues h\u00eddriques, electrol\u00edtiques i energ\u00e8tiques. La composici\u00f3 i el volum de la beguda tindr\u00e0 en compte els factors extr\u00ednsecs (temperatura, humitat, altitud, vent, etc.) que envolten la competici\u00f3, els factors intr\u00ednsecs de l\u2019atleta (nivell de deshidrataci\u00f3, problemes gastrointestinals, tipus de competici\u00f3) i les pr\u00f2pies caracter\u00edstiques de la beguda (gust, temperatura, composici\u00f3). En termes generals, els atletes no acostumen a beure, durant la pr\u00e0ctica esportiva, el volum necessari per reempla\u00e7ar la p\u00e8rdua de fluids i electr\u00f2lits, cosa que fa que calgui establir pautes perqu\u00e8 ho facin.
